There is one thing Kai understands better than almost anybody he has ever met, and in twenty-two years he has never once said it plainly to a single person.
He has said it. Many times. He has taught it, written about it, answered questions on it, and every time it comes out with three qualifications, a distinction, and a caveat about where the analogy breaks down.
All of which are true. That is the trouble.
Every one of those qualifications exists because he has watched somebody take the simple version and go wrong with it. He can name the occasions. There was a man in 2009 who took a plain sentence Kai had said and built something on it that Kai spent a year gently undoing.
So the qualifications are not affectation. They were bought.
And the result, after twenty-two years, is that the thing he knows best has never once left his mouth in a form anybody could carry.
He noticed it on a beach, drawing in wet sand for two children who had asked him something adjacent to it. He drew three things and said a sentence, and one of them said oh, in the way children do, and ran off.
And Kai stayed crouched down for a while, because in about eleven words to a nine year old he had said more of it than he had ever said to an adult.
Then the tide came in over it.
You have your own version. There is something you carry that nobody has ever heard you say simply, and the reasons are good ones and every one of them cost you something.
Nobody here is going to tell you the qualifications do not matter. They do, and the man in 2009 is a real memory.
But there is an instruction in Habakkuk where plainness is the assignment, and the reason attached to it is practical rather than aesthetic.

The reason given is that somebody has to be able to run with it
There is a command in Habakkuk about writing something down, and the clause at the end explains the whole instruction.
And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.Habakkuk 2:2
That he may run that readeth it.
Plainness is not commanded for its own sake and it is not about simplicity as a virtue. It is commanded so that a person can move with it, at speed, without stopping.
Which puts the whole thing in a functional category. A qualification that stops a reader is not a more careful version of the truth in that setting. It is a thing that stops a runner.
And notice who the instruction is given to. A prophet who had just been in an extremely complicated argument with God about justice, in a book that does not simplify anything, and who is not being told to stop thinking. He is being told that the output has a job.
And plainness is the assignment rather than the surrender of one. That is not my flattening: the written word attaches a purpose clause to the instruction, and the purpose is somebody else's ability to move, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a man crouched in wet sand.
And nothing in that verse asks you to know less. He is told to write the vision, which is the whole of what he was given, and the Spirit is the one who makes the distinction between plain and thin, which are not the same thing at all.
What the qualifications are actually protecting
Here is the honest part, and it is not a criticism.
The three qualifications protect two different things and Kai has never separated them.
They protect the hearer, sometimes. There genuinely are people who will take a plain sentence and build something wrong on it, and 2009 happened.
And they protect Kai. Because a sentence with three qualifications on it cannot be misquoted back at him. It cannot be simplified by somebody else into a thing he did not say. It is, in a precise sense, defended.
Both are operating, and they feel identical from the inside, and the second one has been quietly growing for twenty-two years while wearing the clothes of the first.
And you are not responsible for what somebody builds on it. The word says every man shall bear his own burden, and the Spirit is the one who lets a person hand back a weight they were carrying on behalf of a man in 2009 who made his own decisions.
And what you fear happening has already happened and you survived it. The word says the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me, and the Spirit is the one who makes that specific enough to cover being misquoted, which is the actual fear.
Nobody is telling you to drop the qualifications
I want that plain, because a message like this can make a careful person careless within a fortnight.
Keep them. Most of them are load-bearing and you know which. Depth is not the enemy here and this whole site refuses that framing: the correction is direction rather than dilution, and a teacher who becomes shallow to be understood has solved nothing.
And do not go back and simplify your position for anybody who has been asking you to. That request is not always innocent and you are not obliged to meet it.
What is available is one plain sentence, said once, to one person, with everything else still true and still yours.
That is what happened on the sand. He did not stop believing the qualifications. He said eleven words to a child and the qualifications remained exactly where they were.
And you are able to say it plainly. The word puts the instruction and the ability in the same sentence with no suggestion that the prophet lacked capacity, and the Spirit is the one who supplies plainness as a gift rather than requiring it as a performance.
So here is the moment, and it is one sentence out.
Cut one qualification.
Not from your understanding. From the next time you say it out loud to one person.
Pick the one that is protecting you rather than them. You will know it in about four seconds: it is the one you add when you are being listened to closely, rather than the one you add when somebody is about to go wrong.
Say the thing without it, once, to one person.
Make it plain, that he may run that readeth it. The word gives the purpose clause, and the purpose is somebody's ability to move, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a direction rather than a demand to be simple.
And the point is the person hearing it. The word puts a runner at the end of that instruction, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit about who you were given this for.
Cut one. Keep the rest.
Declare this over yourself
- Third qualification, you were bought in 2009 and you are protecting me rather than them. Scripture says make it plain that he may run that readeth it, and a clause that stops a runner is not a more careful truth in that moment.
- Old fear of being misquoted, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. It has already happened and I survived it and spent a year undoing it, and the Lord is my helper and I will not fear what man shall do.
- Lord, You told him to write the vision and make it plain, and the purpose was somebody else moving. I was given this to make it plain, the point is the person hearing it, and cutting one sentence is what I am doing.
