The Question You Did Not Take

Denise saw the hand and she did not take it, and she has known which hand it was ever since.

It was about eight minutes from the end. She had four minutes of material left and then a landing she had worked on, genuinely worked on, the kind of ending that does not arrive by accident, and she knew it was good and she knew where it went.

And a hand went up on the left.

She saw it. She wants that on the record, because she could have missed it and she did not. She saw it, registered who it was, and made a decision in about half a second, which was: if I take that, I lose the end.

So she did the thing everybody does, which is to look slightly past it, and finish the sentence, and let the momentum carry her, and the hand came down.

She landed the ending. It was good. Two people mentioned it afterwards.

And she has thought about that hand for about seven months.

Because she knows who it was, and she knows roughly what the question would have been, and the person has not been back in a way that means anything, and Denise is honest enough not to draw a straight line between those two facts and also honest enough not to pretend she has never wondered.

Now, here is the thing that makes this hard rather than simple.

The ending was not vanity. That is what people assume, and it is wrong. She had built it because it was the part that would carry them out of the room and into their week, and she was right about that, and she has seen it work before.

She was protecting the room. That was the intention.

She was also, at the same moment, declining a person in that room, and both of those were true in the same half second.

You have your own version. There was a hand, or an interruption, or a face doing something, and you had a shape to protect, and you protected it.

Nobody here is going to tell you that endings do not matter. They do.

But there is a line about how Jesus taught that puts the room above the shape, and the phrase in it is exact.

The measure is what they were able to hear

There is a summary sentence in Mark about the whole of His teaching method, and the qualifying clause is the point.

And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.Mark 4:33

As they were able to hear it.

That is a measure taken in the room, in real time, about the people present. It is not a measure of the material and it is not a measure of the plan. It is a reading of capacity, continuously, and the teaching is described as being shaped by it.

And notice that this is a summary. Mark is not describing one occasion where He adjusted; he is describing how the whole thing worked.

Which means the shape of a session, in that description, is downstream of the room rather than upstream of it.

And the measure sits in the hearers rather than in your plan. That is not my reframing: the written word puts as they were able to hear it as the governing clause over the whole method, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a woman who has been carrying one hand for seven months.

And your ending was not vanity. The word calls a word fitly spoken like apples of gold, and a landing that carries people into their week is exactly that, and the Spirit is the one who lets a person keep a real skill without turning it into an idol.

What the half second was actually weighing

Here is the part worth being precise about, and it is not a moral failing.

In that half second Denise was comparing two goods.

One was the ending, which serves the whole room, and which she knew would work, and which was real.

The other was a question from one person, whose content she did not know, which might have been small, and which might have taken the session somewhere unrecoverable with eight minutes left.

That is a genuinely hard comparison and there is no rule that resolves it. Sometimes you should take the hand and sometimes you should not, and a teacher who always takes it has no endings and a teacher who never takes it has no room.

What is worth noticing is not the decision. It is the asymmetry in how she was weighing.

She could see the ending clearly, because she had built it. She could not see the question at all, because it had not been asked. And a comparison between a known good and an unknown one goes the same way almost every time, regardless of which was actually more valuable.

And you are not condemned for a half second. The word says there is now no condemnation for them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit is the one who makes that true in a woman who has been turning one moment over since the spring.

And the outcome was never yours to control. The word says God gave the increase, and the increase is His verb, and the Spirit is the one who lets somebody stop drawing lines between one decision and one person's absence.

Nobody is telling you to take every hand

I want that plain, because a message like this can produce a teacher who never finishes anything.

Take the hand sometimes. Not always. There are sessions where the ending is what the room needs and the question genuinely can wait, and a teacher without judgement about that is not more loving, they are less useful.

And do not go and find that person now to apologize. Seven months on, an apology about a hand would be about you, and they may not remember, and you would be asking them to reassure you.

What is available is the asymmetry: known goods look larger than unknown ones, always, and knowing that is worth something in the next half second you get.

And you have the reading you need in the moment. The word says the Spirit searcheth all things, and He is given to you, and the Spirit is the one who supplies the sense of a room rather than leaving it to a skill you have to perfect.
