ProphetIsaiah 50:4

What The Seeing Costs At Home

This message is for the cost the seeing has quietly had on the people who live with you, who did not sign up for it and have carried it anyway

Keola's wife knows before he does.

Not the thing itself. She does not see what he sees and has never claimed to. What she knows is the weather: that there is one coming, that he has gone slightly quiet in a particular way, that the next fortnight will have a shape to it.

She has been reading that weather for twenty-two years and she has become extremely good at it, and nobody ever asked her to learn.

That is the sentence Keola has been sitting with since a Thursday in March.

They were in the car. She said something entirely mild about the week, and in the middle of it she said, without any weight on it at all, "I could tell on Sunday."

And he said, what do you mean, and she explained, briefly, kindly, the way you explain something you assume the other person already knows about themselves. The quiet. The way he does the washing up. A thing he apparently does with his jaw.

Twenty-two years of data, delivered in about forty seconds, with no complaint attached.

He has not been able to put it down since.

Because here is what he understood in that car. The seeing has not only cost him. It has been costing a household, quietly, the whole time, and the household has absorbed it so competently that he never once had to notice.

His children have a version of this too. His eldest asked him something once, at about fifteen, that he answered too quickly and has thought about ever since.

Now, I want to stay here rather than hurrying, because this is a wound and hurrying past a wound is how a message becomes useless.

Nobody has been wronged. That is what makes it hard to hold. His wife is not resentful. She said it the way you would mention the weather, because to her it is weather, and she has built a life around it happily and would tell you so.

And it still cost her something that nobody has ever named out loud in twenty-two years.

You have your own version. Somebody in your house has learned to read you, and has never been thanked for it, and has probably never mentioned it because to them it is simply how things are.

What The Seeing Costs At Home

The supply in that verse is daily and it is for the speaking

There is a line in Isaiah about the person who carries a word, and the thing to notice is the rhythm of it.

The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.Isaiah 50:4

He wakeneth morning by morning.

It is daily. Not a deposit made once. The tongue and the ear are both described as given, repeatedly, on a schedule, and the schedule is every morning, which tells you the supply was designed to be consumed at about the rate of a day.

And look at what it is for. To speak a word in season to him that is weary. The whole apparatus is pointed at somebody who is tired.

That is worth having for a man in a car in March, because it locates the resource. If the supply is daily and the purpose is a weary person, then a household carrying twenty-two years of weather without a word in season for any of it has been running on the wrong side of that verse.

And you were never meant to hold it between mornings. That is not my construction: the written word puts the waking on a daily cycle rather than a single endowment, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a man who has been carrying a fortnight at a time.

And the ones at home are on the list of the weary. The word points the word in season at him that is weary without narrowing it to the people in the meeting, and the Spirit is the one who lets a person notice their own household inside that sentence, which is remarkably easy to miss.

What is available, and what is not

Now let me be careful about what I am not saying.

I am not telling you the seeing was wrong or that you should have carried less of it. That would be a foolish thing to say about a gift and I do not know your twenty-two years.

I am not telling you to go and apologize to your household tonight either. An apology at the wrong hour, for something nobody has complained about, usually produces confusion and then reassurance, and the reassurance costs them one more thing on top of everything else.

And I am not telling you they are damaged. Keola's wife is not damaged. She is competent and content and has built something good.

What is available is narrower and it is the thing he actually needed.

You can name it. Out loud, once, to the person who has been reading your weather. Not as a confession and not as an apology. As an acknowledgement, which is a different object entirely.

You have been carrying this too, and I did not know, and I do know now.

That is it. It requires nothing from them. It does not ask them to say it was fine, and it does not ask them to say it was not.

And you are safe to say it. Not once you have worked out what it means: the word says perfect love casteth out fear, and the Holy Spirit is entirely able to make an ordinary kitchen a place where a true sentence can be said without anybody having to manage the aftermath.

And nothing about your household is beyond His notice. The word says He putteth my tears into His bottle, and it is said about the person weeping rather than about the one who caused it, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a comfort about somebody else rather than only about oneself.

The daily thing that would change it

There is also a practical thing in that verse, and it is the reason this category has the discipline it has.

Morning by morning. The supply arrives at the rate of a day.

A man who writes it down and dates it and leaves it alone is a man who has put a fortnight's weight onto a page instead of into a house. That is not an administrative habit. It is the difference between a household that lives with a man carrying something and a household that lives with a man who has somewhere to put it.

And you are not the container. The word says cast thy burden upon the Lord and He shall sustain thee, and the casting is a throwing word and the sustaining is His verb, and the Spirit is the one who makes that possible with something that has been held for twenty-two years.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it has two parts and neither is large.

First: write the thing down. The one you are carrying now. Plainly, with today's date on it, and then leave it alone. That is the fortnight going onto a page instead of into a house.

Second, and only if it is the right hour and the right person: say the sentence. You have been carrying this too. Once. Add nothing.

If tonight is not the night for the second part, the first part still stands on its own.

You are supplied daily for this. The word says He wakeneth morning by morning, and it is the Spirit who is the one doing the wakening, which means the resource for tomorrow is not something you have to find tonight.

And the ones at home are inside the promise and not outside it. The word points a word in season at the weary, and the Spirit is the one who makes that reach a kitchen rather than only a meeting.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Fortnight I have been carrying in this house, you are a weight and you were never rent. Scripture says He wakeneth morning by morning, so the supply comes at the rate of a day and I was not built to hold you between them.
  2. Old assumption that they were simply used to it, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. Twenty-two years of somebody reading my weather is not the same as nobody paying for it.
  3. Lord, You give the tongue of the learned to speak a word in season to him that is weary, and the weary in this house are on that list. You gave me eyes for this, and writing it down and dating it and saying one true sentence out loud is what I am doing tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
